"The Christian Counter Culture: Blessed are the Merciful and the Pure in Heart
Matthew 5:7-8, Luke 7:34-50"
Pastor Dave Scherrer
March 7, 2010
Matthew 5:3-11
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
Notes
To be “blessed” is more than to be
lucky or even
happy. To be blessed
is to be in the best possible position a person can be in!
What it means when Jesus says “Merciful”
Mercy goes beyond pity
Mercy goes beyond compassion
Grace is a response to a person's sin
Mercy is a response to a person's need.
What it looks like to be merciful
The meaning of pure in heart
The Pure and the Point
Heart Righteousness is not Rule Righteousness
If you get the heart part straight - the rest will follow
Ez. 36:26
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
Seeing God . . . In a word . . .
Awesome!
