Isaiah 9:6b
. . . and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Luke 2:10, 13-14
And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!"
John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Matthew 10:34-35, Luke 12:51
"Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
Luke 22:35-36
And he said to them, "When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing." He said to them, "But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one.
John 16:33
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."
Notes:
John 6:60-61
When many of his disciples heard it, they said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?" But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, "Do you take offense at this?
How to handle the "Hard Sayings":
- 1. Keep in mind the immediate context:
But that can be harder than it looks
Sometimes the evens are chronologically out of order
Sometimes the sayings are grouped out of
chronological order
- 2. Keep all of scripture in mind, the complete truths of God
- 3. Decide if this is poetry or history or prophecy or teaching, etc.? Each style of scripture needs to be studied in light of its design
- 4. Wrestle with it - Don't give up - use cross references, use scholarly journals and articles, get good counsel and use your common sense
- 5. Remember that you are finite and that your task is to understand the infinite
What is this "peace" that is promised?
Why does there have to be "division" and why "a sword"?
His promise is perfect
