“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). God is our creator. If we believe this, then we as humans actually own nothing. Everything we have - our life, our family, our homes and even our paycheck - has been given to us by God. We are simply stewards of His resources. When we accept this reality, it should have a profound effect on us as Christians. Just as Jesus did for us on the cross, we are called to surrender our lives to God. And when we give of our time, talent and treasure to His church, we do it knowing that we’re simply giving back a portion of what He has given us.
We also give because we trust. Proverbs 3:9-10 tells us to “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing.” God has indeed promised to supply for all our needs.
Finally, we give to build the Kingdom of God. “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:20). Ultimately, God has given us life here on Earth to spread the Gospel and share His gift of eternal life with those around us. When we do, we are storing up treasures in heaven. As we give, we pray that God will bless our ministry and use our collective time, talent and treasure so we may become a 100-fold church.
